Spain passes new pet law

Great news for pet lovers! Spain has just passed a groundbreaking law that officially treats dogs, cats, and other animals as legal members of the family—not mere property.

Under the new legislation (effective January 2022, but still making waves in 2025), in cases of separation or divorce, courts must now consider the well-being of pets when deciding custody. Judges can award shared custody, visitation rights, and even factor in who the pet bonds with most. No more treating your golden retriever like a sofa. Spain says: “They’re family.”

Finally, a country that gets it.

Firework Ban

The Netherlands is implementing a nationwide ban on consumer fireworks, which will take effect after the 2025 (seeing in 2026) New Year celebrations.

Approved earlier this year the ban prohibits the sale and use of most consumer fireworks to minimise stress and harm to animals along with reducing injuries and property damage.

Professional fireworks displays will still be allowed but under strict guidelines.
